What are Assessment Scales?

Assessment Scales are used to adequately measure the degree of a patient’s pain, (dis)comfort or to examine mental status. In the case where the patient is unable to communicate effectively, the observation-based scales offer an objective measurement tool to support the medical professional in his/her decision for the most appropriate patient’s treatment.

As the scoring process, using “pen-and-paper “versions of assessment scales, is often too time consuming and difficult to organize, BioRICS has digitized a number of widely known assessment scales for pain, comfort and mental status.  The advantages of digitized assessment scales are multiple: not only can the observations be carried out much faster and easier but they can now also be integrated into the daily clinical care and contribute to an increased level of patient’s management .  The scales are developed specifically for iPad (Apple) and can be downloaded from the internet (via Appstore).  Additionally, the software offers some extra features through which the patient’s status evolution can easily be followed over time.
