» Health monitoring: development of predictive models for intensive care patients

The integration of measurable biological signals with 'on-line' signal analysis allows the continuous monitoring of biological processes. This way, sudden changes in biological processes can be detected by an automatic control system, which intervenes when necessary. Such an application of modern control theory offers a lot of possibilities in the field of human medicine.
In intensive care, so-called 'patient data management systems' (PDMS) become more common.

These PDMS measure and store a large amount of data for each individual patient on-line. BioRICS develops software to predict for every individual patient their progress, mortality and length of stay in the intensive care unit. Using these models, medical doctors can predict changes in the health condition of individual patients very early and the treatment of the patients can be optimized.
This project is performed in collaboration with the Intensive Care department of the UZ Leuven, coordinated by Prof. G. Van den Berghe.
